Telkom Kenya throws weight behind Kenya National Sevens Rugby Team

• Kshs 4,000,000 boost to National Sevens team kitty
Nairobi, 26 February 2009
Telkom Kenya today announced a much-needed Kshs 4,000,000 cash injection for the Kenya National Sevens Rugby Team. The firm signed a one year renewable contract with the Kenya Rugby Football Union (KRFU) to ensure that the team is in the best condition to perform well in their upcoming tournaments.
The sponsorship will be a big boost to the team as they train their sights on the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai scheduled for March 2009. The sponsorship will also support their continued bid for the title in the remaining matches of the IRB Sevens World Series in Hong Kong, Adelaide, London and Edinburgh, as well as preparations for Kenya's own Safari Sevens.
The announcement was made at Telkom Plaza the company's new head offices on Ralph Bunche road, and was attended by, among others, chairman of the KRFU, Richard Omwela, Telkom Kenya CEO, Dominique Saint-Jean, and the Kenya National Sevens Rugby Team. The rugby team had an opportunity to interact with Telkom Kenya members of staff, and tour the company's new premises.
In his speech, Telkom Kenya CEO, Dominique Saint-Jean said "This sponsorship will enable the team to enjoy the best conditions in which to perform, at their peak, by enabling them to focus on what they need to do and rewarding them for the hard work they put to make all of us proud of Kenya. It is also our way of demonstrating to the team the support of Kenyans."
KRFU Chairman Richard Omwela expressed appreciation to Telkom Kenya on behalf of the team for this partnership which will go a long way in helping the team achieve more together.
The CEO took the opportunity to laud the team for their performance in the IRB World Series, where Kenya has been blazing a trail. Kenya garnered 18 points from the two legs in New Zealand and USA where they trounced world heavyweights South Africa and New Zealand (All Blacks) in the respective tournaments. The team now has 24 points and is ranked sixth in the IRB Sevens World Series ranking. Three players – Collins Injera, Lavin Asego and Victor Oduor are among the top points and try scorers for the season.
Telkom Kenya places the value of bringing people together is at the heart of its operations, and in keeping with this Dominique Saint-Jean invited Kenyans to rally together behind this team that he termed "genuine Kenyan heroes who embody the spirit of our great nation, Kenya and the Telkom Kenya philosophy that together we can do more!"
